Selvakumar Knew Better Chosen by IRA as 2007 Notable Book

Fremont, CA-- Shen’s Books is pleased to announce that the International Reading Association has chosen Selvakumar Knew Better, a picture book depicting a true incident from the 2004 tsunami, as a 2007 Notable Book for a Global Society. This prestigious award from the IRA's Children’s Literature and Reading Special Interest Group honors outstanding trade books that enhance student understanding of people and cultures throughout the world.

Written by award-winning author Virginia Kroll and illustrated with lush watercolors by Xiaojun Li, Selvakumar Knew Better recounts an amazing true story of survival, and a heartwarming tale of one special dog’s devotion and bravery.

When the disastrous December 2004 tsunami strikes his South Indian village, seven-year-old Dinakaran misunderstands his mother’s instructions for escape and mistakenly runs back inside their house by the shore. By barking, nudging, and dragging young Dinakaran by his shirt, family dog Selvakumar manages to convince the boy to run from the house toward the hill where his parents have fled and are waiting, worrying about their eldest son.

While the region is still struggling to recover from the disaster and families rebuild what they have lost, Selvakumar’s inspiring story reminds us that, with the power of love and the strength it can provide, any obstacle can be overcome.

Selvakumar Knew Better and the other winning titles will be officially presented at the International Reading Association Convention in May 2007. An article describing the selections is included in the fall issue of The Dragon Lode, the organization’s semiannual journal.
